Internships

An internship program allows students to explore professional options, gain practical experience by working in their chosen field, and network and make contacts. The department encourages its students to seek internship opportunities to extend their classroom learning and to enhance their attractiveness to prospective employees. Many such opportunities are available through our Mount Career Center; students are also encouraged to seek their own opportunities.

All students are assigned a faculty advisor to assist in setting objectives, monitor their progress, maximize learning opportunities and provide a proper evaluation of the experience. Qualified students receive academic credit for internships. Internships may be full- or part time, last a semester or summer, and may be nonpaying.

Questions about the department’s policies and guidelines for internships should be directed to Dr. Rick C. Brocato. The BAE department has established a formal internship agreement for its economics majors and finance concentration students with the Frederick, Md., office of Merrill Lynch, Inc. Interested students should contact Dr. William G. Forgang.

The Career Center maintains an extensive list of internships online. Students are encouraged to contact the Career Center for assistance in identifying appropriate opportunities. All internships for credit are processed through the Career Center.

National Honor Society for Business

Membership in Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society in business administration, is offered to those students who have attained a grade point average of 3.25 or better and who rank within the top 20% of the department’s majors. The Delta Mu Delta Honor Society was established in 1913 to recognize and reward superior scholastic achievement by students in business subjects. It is recognized nationally by business organizations.

The Beta Pi Chapter was established at Mount St. Mary’s University in 1975 and is open to majors in the department. The department has inducted more than 700 students into the Beta Pi Chapter.

Societies and Clubs

The department sponsors several societies and clubs: the Business Honor Society Beta Pi Chapter, the Accounting Club, the Economics Club, the Finance Club, the Management Club, the Marketing Club and the Sports Management Club. These societies and clubs provide students with leadership opportunities and have very active programs of outside speakers, career nights, social activities and service projects.

The department also sponsors the SIFE team.  SIFE stands for Students in Free Enterprise.  SIFE is a student led organization that takes your classroom education and puts it into practice by developing and executing community outreach projects to solve real world problems.  SIFE projects concentrate on six areas: market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, environmental sustainability, and business ethics.  SIFE teams present the results of their projects at Regional, National, and International Competitions.  Business executives judge the competition, provide feedback to students, and serve as a great networking opportunity.  For more information, please contact Sandra Sjoberg.
Recent Accomplishments:  2007 Regional Champions, 2006 Rookie-of-the-Year Award, 2006 2nd Runner-Up, 2007 Mount St. Mary's Outstanding Club of the Year

Student Research

Students have opportunities for research beyond that required in many classes. Some students arrange independent studies with research programs designed with their instructors. Others may assist faculty members as research assistants. Finally, honors students in business must complete their senior honors thesis as part of the Honors Program.

Federal Reserve Challenge

Economics students regularly participate in an intercollegiate Monetary Policy contest sponsored by the 5th District Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Baltimore Branch. Mount St. Mary’s University was the 1999 Fed Challenge Team Champion and a 2001 Fed Challenge finalist (2nd Place).

Interdisciplinary Minors

Many of the department’s elective courses are cross-listed with other exciting programs, allowing students to add further minors in Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, Latin American Studies, Legal Studies and Non-Western Studies.

Business Advisory Committee

The Business Advisory Committee comprises 20 business leaders and a few academic leaders in other colleges and universities. Its purpose is to provide advice and guidance to the department chair on any aspect of the functioning of the department and the composition of its programs. The committee meets formally each semester in what has become a very comprehensive program of evaluation for the department. The committee members have also been active in coming to campus to speak to students in various classes and settings and have been of assistance to many students in their job search.
