CPSI Core Courses

PSIMA 500 - Introduction to Data Analysis (0 credits) This is a non-credit, remedial course for students who have a limited background in data analysis.

PSIMA 501 - Basic Research Design & Data Analysis (3 credits) This course covers the basic issues related to the design of empirical research studies and the analysis of quantitative data. Students will be introduced to statistical software, such as SPSS and SAS.

PSIMA 503 - Database Management (3 credits) This course shows students how to build, maintain, and access information systems that provide for collection, identification and analysis of public-sector data. Students will be introduced to software packages such as Access and Excel.

PSIMA 504 - Technical Writing (3 credits) This courses is designed to improve students’ written presentation of their analytical work and to expand their ability to use technology in the composing process.

PSIMA 505- Oral Reporting (3 credits) This course is designed to prepare students’ speaking skills as they relate to preparation and delivery of oral presentations in their analytical work products. Students will be introduced to tools and techniques to assist them, including presentation software.

Electives

In addition to the required courses, students in the certificate program will be able to choose two elective courses that are suited to their particular needs. The following are examples of some available courses:

PSIMA 520 - GIS Mapping (3 credits) This course introduces students to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students will learn how to use the tools and techniques that will allow them to perform spatial analysis, address coding, map overlay, etc.

PSIMA 525 - Advanced Research Methods & Data (3 credits) This course provides students with advanced research methods and techniques of quantitative data analysis. Students will learn how to conduct multivariate analyses using statistical software, such as SPSS, SAS and others.

PSIMA 530 - Problem Solving Through Information Systems (3 credits) The course will provide students with methods of identifying and creating solutions to public-sector problems through the use and management of information systems.
