Professor receives development grant from American Heart Association

Assistant Professor Dana Ward, science department, received a Scientist Development grant from the American Heart Association.  This is a career transition award meant for individuals moving into their first faculty position.  The focus of her proposal is to investigate the regulation of human smooth muscle cell growth, as aberrant smooth muscle cell proliferation is a key feature of atherosclerotic disease. The funding is for 4 years ($77,000 per year for a total of $308,000). 

Chesapeake Bay Trust awards mini-grant for stream survey

Jeffrey Simmons, science department received a mini-grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust ($3,600) to do a stream survey of Tom's Creek Watershed and to write a State of the Watershed report. The project also includes creating educational programs with children at Mother Seton School and Emmitsburg Elementary.

Mount signs Memorandum of Agreement with Fort Detrick

President Powell and Mr. William Howell, the acting Director of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command at Forty Detrick, recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement to pursue various exchange programs.  The aim of the Agreement is to extend each institution’s resources through internships, adjunct faculty positions, and research projects.

The Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) is the primary and lead tenant at the Fort Detrick Army Garrison located in Frederick.  There are 38 tenants in all located within Fort Detrick, with nearly 8,000 employees working on the military base every day.  USAMRMC activities include state-of-the-art research at the Army’s Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, medical logistics support worldwide for the soldiers, and a contracting office that awards over $1 billion in support contracts annually.

A similar agreement was also signed with NCI-Frederick, which operates a federally funded research facility for the National Cancer Institute in Frederick.  The bulk of the NCI-Frederick activity is also located within Fort Detrick.  NCI-Frederick conducts state-of-the-art research in cancer and AIDS treatment, and maintains a super computer database used for national research purposes.

Mount hosts International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) Region II Meeting

Thirty- two business program chairs and deans from member institutions attended a full day program on September 28 to discuss the accreditation process and the assessment of student learning, as well as means to respond to the assessments with the development of continuous improvement practices.

Education Department holds Mock Review

The Education department held a Mock Review earlier this month as part of the ongoing accreditation process with NCATE. The reviews focused on:

Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills and Dispositions and

Standard 2: Assessment System and Unit Evaluation. 

The purpose was to gather feedback on the accreditation progress and use to as a "dry run" and help prepare the campus for the actual accreditation team visit in April of 2008.
