BICENTENNIAL UPDATE > Come Back to the Mount to Kick off the Bicentennial August 22-24, 2007 Mount St. Mary's will kick off the Bicentennial with a three-day celebration to include Bicentennial Convocation and Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, dedication of the Waldron Family Stadium on Aug. 23, and unveiling of the Founder's Plaza with a campuswide celebration and evening fireworks on Aug. 24.

Flashbacks Patrick Reynolds, an illustrator who has a syndicated column, Flashbacks, in the Washington Post Sunday comics, will create a multi-part series on the university in honor of the Bicentennial. Look for it to begin this fall.

Bicentennial Baseball: 125 years, Sept. 29, 2007 Pre-Game: Mount alumni vs. Gettysburg College alumni Come see the Mountaineers in old-time uniforms play a throw-back baseball game against Gettysburg College at the Mount's new home field, the E.T. Straw Family Stadium. A BBQ celebration will take place after the game.

Academic Symposium, Oct. 16-17, 2007 Dr. Peter Phan, Ignacio Ellacuria Chair of Catholic Social Thought at Georgetown University, will be the next speaker in Mount St. Mary's Bicentennial Distinguished Lecture Series, Notes to the Class of 2058: The Challenge of Faith and Culture. Dr. Phan will discuss "How Catholic Will the Catholic Church Be in the Next Fifty Years? Theological Reflections on the Mission of the Church."

Matching Grant for Performing Arts Center Received Recent legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly included an appropriation of $2 million towards the planned construction of a performing arts academic center. The performing arts academic center will be designed as an addition to Flynn Hall. The design portion of the project is expected to be substantially complete by early fall.

New Mount Business Team Takes Home Two Awards Members of the Mount's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team received both the "Rookie-of-the-Year" and "2nd-Runners-Up" awards at the SIFE Regional Competition held March 30 in Philadelphia, Pa. More than 40 schools competed.

National Recognition for Mount Student Sophomore Honors Program student Christine Wroge recently received an honorable mention in the 2007 Goldwater Scholarship Competition. Christine competed in a national field of 1,110 science, math and engineering majors and was one of 153 students who received an honorable mention by the review panel of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

ROTC Cadets Among the Best The Green Terror Battalion, which consists of ROTC cadets from the Mount and Hood and McDaniel colleges, received the Douglas MacArthur Award at the annual President's Day review on April 19. This honor means they were selected the number one small ROTC battalion in the nation and recognizes that Mount students in the ROTC program excel academically, militarily and physically.

Seminary Receives Grant from the Koch Foundation Monsignor Steven P. Rohlfs, rector, has announced that the seminary has received a $15,000 grant from the Koch Foundation, Gainesville, Fla. The grant will be used to help fund the Querétaro, Mexico , Summer Intensive Language Program in June and July 2007.

Honorary Degree Awarded Archbishop John Myers ( Newark ) was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Mount at the Lector Installation on April 27. President Thomas Powell made the presentation and Monsignor Steven Rohlfs, rector, read the citation.

Installation into the Ministry of Lector Twenty five seminarians were installed into the ministry of lector on April 27. Seminarians normally receive this ministry at the end of their first year of theological studies.

Deacon Night Fr. Robert V. Zylla, O.S.C., faculty, was awarded an honorary doctorate at Deacon Night for his 36 years of dedicated service to the seminary. President Thomas Powell and Monsignor Steven Rohlfs, rector, made the presentation, and Fr. J. Daniel Mindling, O.F.M. Cap., academic dean, read the citation. Fr. Steve Henrich, O.S.C., prior, represented the Crosier Fathers.

Four Inducted into Mount St. Mary's Sports Hall of Fame The Mount recently inducted four new members into the Sports Hall of Fame at its annual Hall of Fame Dinner. Edward Kuhn (C'63), Brad Hiester (C'91), Greg Goles (C'94) and Chris McGuthrie (C'96) make up the class of 2007.
Established in 1971 by the National Alumni Association, the Mount St. Mary's Sports Hall of Fame annually recognizes former athletes who "have exhibited athletic prowess of an outstanding nature in an intercollegiate sport." Read about this year's class.

NCAA 2005-06 APR Scores Reveal that Mount Student Athletes Excel The NCAA released publicly their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for 800 Division I teams. Thirteen of the Mount's 18 sports ranked above the national average, with four teams ranked in the 80-90th percentile. Mount St. Mary's University's Women's Golf and Tennis teams had perfect scores of 1,000.

Record Wins This Season The Mount's baseball team set a school record for wins this season and entered the final weekend of Northeast Conference play tied for first place. Follow their progress here.
The women's lacrosse team advanced to the Northeast Conference championship game before falling in a 9-8 heartbreaking loss to Monmouth.

Mysteries of Light On Sunday, April 28, Bishop Francis Malooly, Western Vicar of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, dedicated and formally blessed the five new Mystery of Light memorials at the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes. More than 100 guests and Grotto supporters participated in the celebration on this glorious spring day. During President Thomas Powell's presentation and the dinner that followed, all were asked to remember how cherished the Grotto is, the importance of the sacred shrine to the Mount and how so many different people, cultures and groups visit the Grotto for peace and prayer. Father Jack Lombardi, chaplain of the shrine, also spoke of the beautiful generosity of all the donors, Dr. Powell and the university, whose support of the project has generated in excess of $175,000.
