Students Work to Beautify Campus
Environmental Club members, led by junior Laura Fenaroli, spent a Saturday in October planting more than 160 plants at the Mount's new Peace Plaza . The new plants will enhance the natural beauty of the Plaza's setting. Elvin Wolfe, master gardener at the Mount, and Mike Malewicki, vice president for business and finance, spearheaded the effort, which is part of the campus master plan. A granite marker, engraved with Pacem in Terris , will be added to the Plaza this spring as will brick pavers with peace written more than 50 languages.

Ten classmates from the Bicentennial Class of 2008, led by junior Ryan Audy, joined staff and community volunteers to plant 3,000 daffodil bulbs in front of the Mount sign facing Route 15. The Maryland State Highway Administration supplied the bulbs as part of their efforts to beautify state roads. Look for masses of blooms when spring arrives!

Bicentennial Stamp Card and Maryland Symphony Orchestra
The Mount will host the Maryland Symphony Orchestra on April 26, 2008, and invites the entire Mount community and the surrounding communities to save the date for a concert celebrating our Bicentennial and the dedication of the Bicentennial Stamp Card. The U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the 200th anniversary of Mount St. Mary's University with the issuance of this stamped card. This will be a free event open to everyone!

Mount to Exhibit Rare Collection of Manuscripts and Texts
The university will host an extraordinary collection of original manuscripts and rare texts from the Remnant Trust Foundation. Some of the rare editions include: "Summa Theologiae," 1475, by St. Thomas Aquinas, one of only three known copies in the world; "Magna Carta," 1542, one of the earliest English translations from original Latin; "The Bill of Rights," 1789, first printing; and "The Declaration of Independence," 1776, third edition. The Remnant Trust requires that institutions exhibiting the collection put the books and manuscripts to use in their curricula. They require that professors borrow the documents and discuss them in class - something highly unusual for holdings this rare.

Mount Fall Phonathon Raises over $120,000 for the Annual Fund
From mid-September through early October, several dozen Mount students called alumni and parents to raise money for the university's Annual Fund. Student callers raised more than $120,000 while winning MP3 players, a television, and various other prizes in weekly and nightly competitions.

Several times each year, the Mount Annual Fund conducts a phonathon to raise funds for student scholarships and financial aid, library resources, faculty development, student activities, and other university operating expenses. Because tuition does not cover the full cost of a Mount student's education, supplemental funding sources are essential. Tuition only covers 72% of the Mount's per student costs. The remaining 28% is raised through other sources, including the Mount Annual Fund.  If we missed you during our Fall Phonathon and you would like to make your gift now, click here. or call (301) 447-5361.
