Meet the 2007 Hall of Fame Inductees: Mount St. Mary’s University has inducted four new members into the Sports Hall of Fame for 2007. This year’s inductees are: Ed Kuhn, C’63, Brad Hiester, C’91, Greg Goles, C’94, and Christ McGuthrie, C’96. Established in 1971 and sponsored by the National Alumni Association, the Mount St. Mary's Sports Hall of Fame acknowledges past athletes who "have exhibited athletic prowess of an outstanding nature in an intercollegiate sport." Inductees over the past years have included former members of the basketball, football, baseball, cross country, boxing, soccer, track, tennis, lacrosse, decathlon, field hockey, softball and golf teams, as well as coaches and individuals who have contributed to the Mount's athletic program. Edward J. Kuhn, Jr., Class of 1963, is a legend in the Reading/Berks County, PA region, where he is well known by many as the university’s ambassador – Mr. Mount St. Mary’s. For over 35 years he has referred outstanding student athletes to the Mount. In the days before the school had a full time sports information director, Ed would personally take information, results, etc. about his “kids” to the Reading newspapers and lobby the sports editor and writers to consider articles for inclusion in the Sports section. Ed has recruited over nineteen student athletes for the Mount, including eight Hall of Fame members, four All-Americans, and two NCAA Division II National Champions. It is important to note that the graduation rate for these former student athletes is 100%. Bradley T. Hiester, Class of 1991, was the top scorer for the Men’s Soccer team for three of his four years at the Mount. In the 1990 Men’s Soccer media guide, Coach Jim Deegen refers to Brad as “the best player I have ever had.” His freshman year he helped the Mount to a school record 14 wins. Brad was a member of the All-Northeast Conference first team in 1989, as well as the Division I All-State team and a regional All American that year. As a senior captain Brad sprained his ankle, missing the first four weeks of the season, and was still the fifth team scorer with 11 points. He is ranked fourth in goals on the Mount’s all-time list, and sixth in overall points. Hiester was the first player ever to receive a full scholarship to play soccer at the Mount. He excelled in the classroom as well as on the field, achieving Dean’s List honors in 1991. Greg M. Goles, Class of 1994, was inducted to the Hall of Fame for his excellence in both Men’s Soccer and Men’s Lacrosse. Named to the All-Tournament Team Blue Ridge Mountain Soccer Tournament for three consecutive years, Greg was captain of the Men’s Soccer team for his junior and senior years, and captain of the Men’s Lacrosse team his senior year. As far as records indicate, Greg is the only male athlete to have been so honored since the Mount attained Division I status. His senior year Greg was the recipient of the prestigious Kolon Award, as well as named Lacrosse MVP, and Outstanding Male Athlete for the Class of 1994. Greg is in the Mount’s top five all-time soccer record both in number of games played and number of games started. He was nominated for All-American status in Lacrosse in 1994. After graduation Greg remained at the Mount as an Assistant Soccer and Lacrosse Coach. He was then recruited to play lacrosse in Australia, which he did for 18 months. Chris M. McGuthrie, Class of 1996, played in 115 games during his four years with the Men’s Basketball team, 1992-1996. His freshman year he was named to the All-Tournament Team as well as the Second Team All-NEC and was declared NEC Newcomer of the Year. By the time he was a junior he advanced to First Team All-NEC, a title which he held into his senior year. He helped lead the team to the 1995 NCAA Tournament and was named NEC Player of the Year for the 1995-96 season. Chris is the Mount’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,297 points, and averaged 20 points per game over his career. He holds third place on the Mount’s all-time points record in a single season with 647 points. He ranks first in field goal attempts (1,947 total attempts), 3-point field goals (300 made), and 3-point field goal attempts (877 total attempts). He holds several additional rankings in the Mount’s all-time lists. |
