
Mount St. Mary’s - In the Middle of Everything! While there is A LOT going on at the Mount campus, there may be times you want to explore the surrounding area. Check out this page to see just how much there is to do right in our backyard. GENERAL TOURISM Being just a short drive from several cities means you have unlimited opportunities to expand your social and cultural horizons as well as experience American history right at your fingertips! Gettysburg, Pa. Only 10 minutes north of the Mount, Gettysburg’s rich history is readily accessible. Visit the area battlefields, watch historical reenactments, and enjoy museums, shopping, and movies in town. Be sure to check out special events during this bicentennial year of President Lincoln’s birth! Frederick, Md. Just 25 minutes from Mount St. Mary’s, Frederick features historic Civil War sites, parks, and shopping and dining in its downtown “Golden Mile” district. Harpers Ferry, W.Va. Enjoy hiking, white water rafting, and information about John Brown’s historic raid near this scenic riverside spot about one hour from the Mount. Baltimore, Md. Approximately an hour’s drive from the Mount, Baltimore offers plenty of entertainment and history with its Inner Harbor, museums, the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, and Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadiums, home to the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens!
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Do you love the great outdoors? Here are some ways you can experience Mother Nature just a short distance from campus. Caledonia State Park Hiking trails, fishing, swimming, golf, and more, located just 15 minutes from the Mount in Fayetteville, Pa. There are many other state parks located nearby as well; visit Maryland State Parks (select from sites in Western or Central Maryland) or Pennsylvania State Parks (select from Pennsylvania Dutch Country) for more information. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo A privately-owned, family-oriented zoo located in Thurmont, Md. (about 15 minutes south of Emmitsburg), featuring over 350 animals, safari, petting zoo and more. The Links at Gettysburg Play 18 holes on a scenic green with a view of the historic Gettysburg battlefields, just 20 minutes from the Mount's campus. Liberty Mountain Resort Enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing, just a 10 minute drive from campus! Other local resorts include Ski Roundtop and Whitetail Mountain, both located about 45 minutes away. River and Trail Outfitters Interested in some whitewater action, or just a lazy float down the river? Get your H20 fix with rafting, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and more! Located 45 minutes from the Mount. The Maze at Crumland Farms Eight acres of twisty-turny joy in the middle of a real working cornfield, this seasonal maze, which is located just 15 minutes from campus, is a favorite among Mount students.
SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINMENT The Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg Over 70 retailers, plus a food court and 10 screen movie theater just 15 minutes away from campus.
Francis Scott Key Mall Located in Frederick, just 25 minutes from Mount St. Mary's, FSK Mall features four department stores and many specialty shops and restaurants. The mall is also surrounded by additional shopping and dining areas. Historic Downtown Frederick More than 200 specialty shops, art galleries and restaurants can be found in bustling Downtown Frederick, one of the region's premiere arts and entertainment districts. Power Plant Live Baltimore's ultimate dining, entertainment and retail destination, Power Plant Live is located about an hour from campus at the heart of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. It features plenty of restaurants, dance clubs and live music venues for students to enjoy. The Maryland Ensemble Theater Located 15 minutes south of the Mount in Frederick, the MET features live, professional performances of contemporary and original works ranging from comedy to drama to musicals virtually every weekend. Adventure Park USA A wild west-themed family entertainment center located just 30 minutes from campus in New Market, MD. Featuring go-karts, bumper boats, miniature golf, paint ball, laser tag, arcade games, kiddie-rides, and more. Open year-round.
TOURS AND SIGHTSEEING Battlefield Tours Experience the history of the Civil War up close as you explore the battlefields. Ghosts of Gettysburg Tours Choose from four guided candlelit tours through historic neighborhoods in town. National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Attend Mass at the basilica, visit Mother Seton's tomb, and walk through museum exhibits about the first American-born Saint and founder of the Sisters of Charity, who spent several years of her life in Emmitsburg. Historic Church Walking Tours Get an inside look at eight of the area's oldest churches and learn about their roles in the Civil War. Tours are approximately 90 minutes.
