The Chaplain plays a central role in developing and ensuring the Catholic identity and mission of the Grotto while coordinating the life of the Church there. Key areas of responsibility include coordinating the spiritual life of the Grotto and meeting obligations for Mass. The Chaplain is expected to be welcoming to all pilgrims and help build a sense of community between the Grotto, Mount St. Mary’s University and the greater community. He interacts and cooperates at various levels in order to minister effectively to the entire community.
The Chaplain plays a secondary role in assisting the University Chaplain in Campus Ministry in meeting the needs of the students. In addition, he will work with the Rector of the Seminary in developing seminarian formation. He interacts and cooperates at various levels in order to minister effectively to the entire community.
The Grotto Chaplain should be an ordained Roman Catholic Priest in good standing with the Church with permission from the proper ecclesiastical authority to serve at Mount St. Mary's University. He will possess a Master’s of Divinity and/or a Master’s degree in Theology (or a related field), be intellectually competent, and have a least five years pastoral experience in a parish, educational, or other ministerial setting. He should possess spiritual depth, exceptional counseling skills, and preaching abilities.
The Chaplain should be naturally outgoing, open to various cultures and constituencies that frequent the Grotto and willingly share responsibility with others in a collegial manner
