Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
Service-Learning integrates experiences outside the classroom with an academic curriculum taught within the classroom. As one form of experiential education, service-learning seeks to broaden students' understanding of course content through activities which are, at the same time, of service to the community. Through structured reflection on their service, students are able to test and deepen their understanding of theoretical approaches in virtually any discipline.
Service-Learning at Mount St. Mary's University can take on one of two forms:
Integrated Service-Learning: The service-learning component is integrated into the course's core curriculum. All students are required to participate in the project as it is a course requirement.
Fourth Credit Option: The service-learning component is optional to students. Faculty may offer students the option to engage in a service-learning project and sufficient reflection for an extra credit on their transcript. Faculty interested in offering the fourth credit option should contact Mike Taberski for the appropriate form.
