Keynote Presenter: Julie Coiro, Ph.D.
Session:  Teaching the New Literacies of Online Reading Comprehension

Julie Coiro is an assistant professor of reading in the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island. Previous to that, Julie worked as co-director of the New Literacies Research Lab at the University of Connecticut. Her research interests include reading comprehension strategy instruction, the new literacies of the Internet, and effective practices for technology integration and professional development. She is currently co-investigator on a four-year federal research project to develop valid and reliable assessments of online reading comprehension.

In 2009, Julie was a distinguished finalist for the International Reading Association’s Dissertation Award and, in 2011 she received the Early Career Achievement Award from the Literacy Research Association. Julie is a former middle school and elementary school teacher and has provided professional development to teachers around the country for the past 20 years. Her work appears in venues such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Journal of Literacy Research, Educational Leadership, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and the 2nd Edition of the International Handbook of Literacy and Technology. She is co-author of the 4th edition of the book Teaching with the Internet K-12: New Literacies for New Times (2004) and co-editor of the Handbook of Research on New Literacies (2008). 


Featured Speaker:  Sarah Lohnes Watulak, Ph.D.
Session: Beyond Technology Skills: Beyond Technology Skills: Designing Through Critical Digital Literacies

Sarah Lohnes Watulak is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Technology and Literacy, College of Education, Towson University (MD). She earned her Ed.D. in Communication and Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University. Sarah also has several years' experience in faculty technology professional development. At Towson, Sarah teaches instructional technology courses at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. Her research primarily focuses on undergraduate students' new literacies and technology practices. Her most recent work has focused on the development of critical digital literacies among pre-service teachers, the results of which will be published in a forthcoming edited volume from Peter Lang.

Featured Book: The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age by William Kist

William Kist, an associate professor at Kent State University, has been researching classroom uses of new media for over a decade.  His profiles of teachers who are broadening our conception of literacy were included in his first book, New Literacies in Action and have been expanded in his book, The Socially Networked Classroom, focusing on the uses of Web 2.0 in the classroom. Remaining active in video production work over the years, William Kist is the recipient of an Ohio Educational Broadcasting Network Commission Honorable Mention for the documentary The Learning Age and a regional Emmy Award nomination for outstanding achievement in music composition for the documentary series Our Family.  To link to Bill Kist's videos, CLICK HERE

Teacher Rate:  $85.00 per person

Disounted Student Rate For pre-service enrolled in initial certificaton education programs:  $40.00 per person

MSDE Credit

1 credit.  Additional readings and personalized project to meet 15 required hours. Available for an extra $15 fee.  CLICK HERE for the syllabus.
