3rd Annual Scripture Institute
Scripture and the Moral Life
 
Wednesday & Thursday - July 11 and 12, 2012

Mount St. Mary's University's Theology Department will host this two day Scripture Institute focusing on Scripture and the Moral Life. Theology Professor, Dr. David McCarthy, will be joined by additional University and Seminary professors in exploring this important topic. While familiarity with the basics of biblical scholarship will be helpful, this program is suitable for any interested adult.
Recommended reading for the Institute is:  After You Believe: Why Christian Character Matters by N.T. Wright.

The beautiful mountainside campus of Mount St. Mary’s University provides a perfect backdrop for two days of learning and renewal. Come with your burning questions and insights. We will provide plenty of our own, plus the best resources we can find to help you unlock the treasure of the beloved Scriptures.

Register as a commuter or spend the night in air-conditioned comfort at Mount St. Mary's Seminary. All meals will be held in the Mount's Patriot Dining Hall. Transportation will be provided for those who have walking issues.We hope you join us!

Presenters:

David McCarthy, Ph.D.
Dr. McCarthy is the Fr. James M. Forker Professor of Catholic Social Teaching. He teaches and writes in the areas of Catholic social teaching and moral theology. He is the author of three books; the most recent is Sharing God's Good Company. He has written over fifty articles and essays.  He is the editor of The Heart of Catholic Social Teaching, Gathered for the Journey: Moral Theology in Catholic Perspective, and the Journal of Moral Theology.  David lives in Emmitsburg with his wife and their five children. 

David Cloutier, Ph.D.
Dr. Cloutier joined the Mount faculty in 2006 and teaches courses in moral theology, Catholic social ethics, and marriage and sexual ethics, as well as general theology courses.  He is the author of Love, Reason and God's Story: An Introduction to Catholic Sexual Ethics (2008) and editor of the collection: Leaving and Coming Home, New Wineskins for Catholic Sexual Ethics (2010).  He is currently at work on the moral problem of luxury, and is working toward a moral framework that combines Aristotelian/Thomist moral theory with the theological approach of the nouvelle theologie.      

Steven Smith, Ph.D.
Dr. Smith is Assistant Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Mount, teaching and presenting on an array of biblical and theological topics including: Jesus and the Four Gospels, Principles of Biblical Interpretation (Hermeneutics), the Old Testament and early Judaism. He completed his Ph.D. in New Testament / Early Christianity at Loyola University of Chicago and his dissertation, which examined the Wisdom Christology of the Gospel of John, was under Dr. Urban von Wahlde, a leading specialist in Johannine source criticism.


William Collinge, Ph.D.
Dr. Collinge joined the Mount faculty in 1980. He now holds the Knott Professorship in Theology and a joint appointment to the Department of Philosophy. He has research interests in Augustine, Catholic social teaching, and spirituality. He is the author of Historical Dictionary of Catholicism (second edition, Scarecrow, 2012). Since 1996, he has chaired the Adams County, (PA) Heritage Festival. 


Mary Kate Birge, SSJ. Ph.D.    
Sr. Mary Kate has her AB in Spanish, Latin and Secondary Education from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, MA, an MA in Classical Studies from Tufts University, an MA in Theology from St. John's University, Collegeville, MN, a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America, and is one paper away from another MA in Christian Spirituality From Creighton University in Omaha, NE.  Her research interests range among Pauline literature, Synoptic Gospels, Feminist Hermeneutics and Ignatian Spirituality. Her most recent publication, a joint work with three other scholars entitled Genesis: Evolution and the Search for a Reasoned Faith, is published by Anselm Academic.

  9:15-10:45    Session 1 - The Virtues of the Christian Life - Dr. David Cloutier
                        We will discuss the emphasis in Christian ethics on character 
                        (Who we are) and vocation (Who we are called to be).
10:45-11:00    Break
11:00-12:30    Session 2 - Priest, Prophet, King - Dr. Steven Smith
                       We will focus on the call on discipleship in terms of Scripture and the Liturgy.
12:30-  1:30    Lunch
  1:30-  3:00    Session 3 - The Sermon on the Mount - Dr. Steven Smith
                       The session concentrates on 
                       Jesus' proclamation of the 
                       Kingdom and his Sermon on 
                       the Mount.
  3:00-  4:00    Personal Reflection / Reading
  4:00 - 5:00    Eucharist
  5:00 - 6:30    Supper
  6:30 - 8:00    Session 4 - The Parables of Luke -                       Dr. Bill Collinge - With particular attention to 
                       Benedict XVI's Jesus of Nazareth, we will study the parables of Luke.
  8:00 -10:00   Evening Social, followed by Wednesdays at the Fountain

  9:15-10:45    Session 5 - St. Paul: "Transformed by the Renewal of Your Mind" - Romans 12:2 - 
                       Sr. Mary Kate Birge 
                       We will discuss the Christian life in the letters of St. Paul.
10:45-11:15    Break
 11:15-12:00   Eucharist
  12:00- 1:15   Lunch
    1:15-  2:45  Session 6 - Sacrament and the Moral Life -  Dr. David McCarthy 
                       This concluding session will put the Christian life in a sacramental context. We are called
                       to be embodiments of the Kingdom of God.  This embodiment is shaped by the
                       sacramental life of the Church, by repentance, renewal, and being formed into the one 
                       body of Christ.
