The Mount Summer Teacher Institute is an opportunity for teachers to engage in a day of professional development, skill building and enrichment. This annual event has been successful in providing educational sessions as well as MSDE and PA ACT 48 credits for local teachers. Click here to download the MSDE Syllabus.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own "device" -- laptop, IPAD or other tablet.
Event fee will include a copy of the book, Best Practices in Writing Instruction, Second Edition (2013) by Steve Graham, Ed.D., editor; Charles A. MacArthur, Ph.D., editor; and Jill Fitzgerald, Ph.D., editor.
An indispensable teacher resource and course text, this book presents evidence-based practices for helping all K-12 students develop their skills as writers. Every chapter draws clear connections to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Leading authorities describe how to teach the skills and strategies that students need to plan, draft, evaluate, and revise multiple types of texts. Also addressed are ways for teachers to integrate technology into the writing program, use assessment to inform instruction, teach writing in the content areas, and tailor instruction for English language learners and struggling writers. Helpful case examples are featured throughout.

Keynote: Designing Effective Writing Instruction
Charles A. "Skip" MacArthur is a professor of special education and literacy at the School of Education at University of Delaware. A former special education teacher, he teaches courses on literacy problems, writing instruction, and educational research. His major research interests include writing development and instruction for struggling writers, development of self-regulated strategies, adult literacy, and applications of technology to support reading and writing.
Skype Session: 21st Century Writing Instruction for K-12 Students
Rachel Karchmer-Klein is an associate professor of literacy education at the University of Delaware. She earned her doctorate in reading education at Syracuse University in 1999 and began her university career at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA the same year. In 2003, Dr. Karchmer-Klein joined the faculty at the University of Delaware where her research continues to focus on the relationship between digital technologies and reading and writing, with particular emphasis on the practical implications of technology use in K-12 education.
Breakout Sessions:
Effective Writing Strategies for Secondary Students with Disabilities
Teaching students to develop quality persuasive paragraphs is an essential writing skill at the secondary level. Participants in this session will learn researched proven writing strategies for persuasive writing/editing which can be used across the curriculum.

Lingering in Revision: Teaching Young Writers to Craft Vivid Images
Participants adopt a writer's lens and discover how professional authors use precise language and varied grammatical structures to craft vivid images in their writing. During the presentation, participants simulate interactive, multi-sensory techniques for imitating author's craft using mentor texts, visual scaffolds, manipulatives, and human sentences.

Making Feedback Happen
Participants investigate research-based strategies and prompts for effective writing conferencing culminating in learning how to assist students in deciding next steps or goal setting.

Scaffolding Writing Instruction for Elementary ELLs
Elementary classroom teachers will identify typical issues in the writing of English language learners (ELLs) and learn how to implement different types of scaffolding techniques in their writing instruction to improve the content, organization, and mechanics of their ELL students' writing.

The Power of Google in the Age of the Common Core State Standards
This session will provide hands-on practice using Google as a source of informational text when planning CCSS lessons/units. Participants will use a high-quality informational title of their choice and Google to begin designing constructed responses aligned to the CCSS.
