BEYOND THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM More than half of all science majors at the Mount pursue research projects on an individual basis with faculty members in the department. Chemistry students have been honored by the American Chemical Society for their outstanding research, and other majors have presented their research to the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences and at national meetings. As a student, you will have the opportunity to conduct original research and assist in faculty projects: - explore the molecular basis of cancer and inflammatory diseases
- travel to Panama and study how female frogs choose their mates
- study the genetic basis of autism
- examine the chemical composition of coins of Herod Agrippa I to determine their origin
- study the evolution of plant defense to herbivory
- develop procedures and materials for undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory experiments
- investigate the molecular pathways involved in neuron survival
- study the chemistry and spectroscopy of transition metal complexes
- develop laser-based methods for the study of biophysical phenomena
- explore the impact of coal mining on watershed health
Many opportunities are available to participate in activities and youth outreach sponsored by the Science Club, the Environmental Club, the Women in Science Residential Program and the Mount’s chapter of the biology honor society Beta Beta Beta. And the Mount’s convenient location puts several exciting internship sites within easy reach. Recent Internships - National Cancer Institute
