Honors Research at the Mount and Beyond Last spring, 25 senior honors students presented their research to the Mount community. They conducted seminars in accounting, biology, communications, education, English, finance, history, information systems, music, philosophy, political science, sociology and theology. Several students also shared their work with professionals beyond the Mount. Rebecca Gilbride, a biology major and chemistry minor, co-authored a paper with Dr. A. J. Russo on their research into possible genetic causes of autism. The paper was accepted into the Journal of the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences. Rebecca received a $2,000 grant from the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honors Society for the research she completed for Dr. Russo and later used in her honors project. She plans to continue publishing her work. Education majors Jaci Drass and Kathleen Lindsey copresented a session at the annual conference of the State of Maryland International Reading Association Council along with their mentors, Drs. Judy Ramoy Johnstone and Barbara Martin Palmer. The conference was attended by approximately 1,200 educators. The presentation integrated Jaci’s honors research on overweight characters in children’s books with Kathleen’s research on the use of textsets in the classroom. |
