Master of Arts in Teaching Program

The Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for those who seek an initial Maryland teaching certificate and a graduate degree.

This program serves students who did not earn a bachelor’s degree in education and who seek to become teachers. Click on each study option below for the degree requirements.

As part of the teacher internship semester, MAT students will develop a final professional portfolio.

MAT with initial certification in Elementary Education (grades 1-6, middle)
For those who seek to become a Maryland certified elementary school teacher and receive a graduate degree

MAT with dual certification in Elementary (grades 1-6, middle) and Special Education (grades 1-8)
For those individuals seeking initial certification in both elementary and generic special education as well as a graduate degree

MAT with initial certification in Secondary Teaching (grades 7-12)
For those who hold a bachelor’s degree in a specific content area and are seeking initial certification at the secondary level and a graduate degree. The content areas include English, French, Latin, Spanish, business education, mathematics and social studies.

MAT with initial certification in Art Education (grades preK-12)
For those who have earned an undergraduate degree in fine arts and are seeking a master’s degree in art education.

MAT with initial certification in Music Education (grades preK-12)
For those who have earned an undergraduate degree in fine arts and are seeking a master’s degree in music education.
