University Provost

Dr. David Rehm serves as Provost at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, a position he has held for seven years. Dr. Rehm oversees all academic programs and activities at the Mount, the nation's second oldest Catholic university. Dr. Rehm has spent 18 years at Mount St. Mary's in various positions, each of which has required increased responsibility. Dr. Rehm's academic expertise lies in Greek philosophy, and he earned his doctorate in 1994 from the University of Chicago. Dr. Rehm, deeply committed to liberal arts education, began teaching in the Philosophy Department in 1995. In 1997, he was appointed Director of the Mount's nationally recognized Freshman Seminar program, a position he held through 2003. In 2002, he won the John Richards Award for Teaching Excellence, and in 2003, he won a national award, the First-Year Advocate Award from the National Resource Center for the First Year Experience and Students in Transition, honoring his work with first-year college students. He also won, in 2005, the Honors Program Distinguished Service Award. From 2002 through 2005, he co-chaired the Mount's reaccreditation process through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. And from 2004-2006, he served as Dean for Academic Affairs and as Associate Provost.

As Provost, Dr. Rehm has instituted academic reorganization into a schools model, shepherded and launched the development of a new general education program, the Veritas program, overseen the development of new academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, strengthened the admissions operation, and overseen the hiring, development, and tenure of faculty.

Dr. Rehm is actively engaged with the profession. In recent years, he has presented papers on retention, college preparation among high school students, Catholic higher education, planning and budgeting, and the liberal arts. Dr. Rehm also serves regularly as an evaluator and team chair for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. He serves on the Middle States Steering Committee engaged in revising the accreditation standards for the 500 schools in the Middle States region.

Dr. Rehm has continued his professional development while serving as Provost. He participated in the Wye River Dean's Seminar in 2007 and now serves on the Advisory Council for the Wye River Seminars. He completed Harvard's Institute for Educational Management program in 2010. He was selected as one of 20 participants in the Council of Independent College's "Vocation and the Presidency" seminar (sponsored by the Lilly Foundation) in 2011, in which he and his wife took part. He took part in the American Council on Education's "Advancing to the Presidency" workshop in 2011. And for the 2013-2014 academic year, he is one of 40 participants in the Executive Leadership Academy, a year-long program to prepare experienced provosts and vice presidents to become college and university presidents.

Dr. Rehm received his B.A. from Oberlin College in 1983 with majors in music and intellectual history. He is married to Nancy Rehm, a high-school teacher in Biglerville, PA, and they have two children, Alex Rehm and Remee Klos. He enjoys exercising and weightlifting, reading, and wine.
