The 4,000 square-foot structure will house administrative offices, a gallery, gift shop, museum area depicting the history of the Grotto and an outdoor cloister area for visitors to enjoy.
“We are thrilled construction has kicked-off. We have a glorious National Shrine on our campus here at Mount St. Mary’s and it is about time we have top-notch center to welcome our many visitors,” says President Thomas Powell.
“The Center will be open to the public all year-round,” says Bill Tronolone, director of the Grotto. “The addition of the Visitor Center makes the Grotto a year-round destination spot for those visiting, who may be held back during the winter months or inclement weather.”
The $2.7 million project is funded primarily by donor gifts to the Grotto and completion of the Center is expected in March-2013. The National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes will remain open during the construction with regular hours and masses held daily.
