Making a Difference: Mount student heads to Teach for America
Emmitsburg, Maryland - Mount St. Mary’s University senior Maria Sylvester’s post-graduation plans take her a long way from Emmitsburg and her Lansdale, Pennsylvania hometown.
Maria will be joining the 2012 Teach for America Corp, teaching Secondary English in the Eastern North Carolina region in August after completing a 5 week orientation and training in Houston, TX.
“My English professors have instilled in me an appreciation for literature, while my Education professors challenged and encouraged me to share my love of the English language with secondary students,” says Maria. “My Mount education empowered me with the confidence I needed to not only apply to Teach for America but also accept their offer to the 2012 Corps,”
Teach for America is a non-profit organization which is committed to providing an excellent education for kids in low-income communities.
Learning from and being inspired by influences at the Mount helped Maria make this choice to make a difference. “My professors, administrators, and staff members have supported me both in and out of the classroom, and their belief in me as someone who can make a difference as a teacher is simply invaluable.”
