State Certification in Teaching Mathematics
The mathematics and computer science department offers a program that enables math majors to acquire certification in teaching. Through this program, graduates meet secondary-level certification requirements for Maryland and many other states. With one exception, students who elect this program must fulfill the same requirements as any other math major: secondary education majors may substitute student teaching for Seminar II. For required education courses, please refer to the education department.
Mathematical Contest in Modeling
Mount math majors participate annually in the international Mathematical Contest in Modeling, sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics, www.comap.com.
Mathematical Association of America
The Mount’s MAA student chapter recently toured NIST, attended a symposium on the History of Cryptology and attended the MAA regional meeting in Charlottesville, Va. It also offered math review sessions for all 100-level math classes. The advisor is Melanie Butler.
Association for Computing Machinery
The Mount’s ACM student chapter has sponsored LAN parties, movie nights, gaming competitions and a “fastest computer” competition. The chapter also runs a community service project in which members build and over-clock computers for members of the Mount community. In fact, the group built five of the six Linux workstations in the department. Along with MAA, the chapter also sponsors a lecture series. The advisor is Scott Weiss.
In 2005, the Mount inducted a new chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society, and installed its first members. Pi Mu Epsilon was founded in 1914 at Syracuse University and now has more than 300 chapters in the United States. The Maryland Eta Chapter’s advisor is Luca Petrelli.
Mount Math Madness Problem of the Week
Mount Math Madness is a problem of the week contest held by the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Every Monday, an interesting and fun problem will be posted on the contest webpage Mount Math Madness Problem of the Week (on-campus access only) and the bulletin board across from SCI 110. All Mount students may email answers to: mmmpow@msmary.edu. Over the first 10 weeks of the contest, students will accumulate points. The top 8 students will face-off in a bracket challenge. Various prizes will be awarded to the top two students in the bracket and there will be a prize drawing among all students who participated. If you would like additional information please visit our webpage or contact Jonelle Hook. Find us on Facebook.
