The Mount’s Pre-Med program prepares you for a career in all the medical fields: allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, podiatry, optometry, anesthesiology, physician assistant and more. Solid preparation for a health profession involves more than just taking the right courses. We take a comprehensive approach to ensure that you are a strong candidate for admission to medical or other professional schools, and that you will be successful once you’re there.
We combine a strong curriculum in the sciences with our Veritas liberal arts program to prepare you to be an engaged and critical thinker with excellent communication skills. But for a competitive application to professional schools, you need to develop a distinctive “portfolio” of achievements, skills and experiences (see figure). Professional schools look for these distinctive elements as they review applications and the Mount provides numerous opportunities for you to acquire them.
We provide great opportunities to engage in undergraduate research with faculty – on publication quality research projects – during the academic year and over the summer. Our Summer Research Internship Program provides a stipend for students to stay at the Mount over a summer to work full-time with a faculty member on a research project, and you’ll present your work at our annual research SPARC Festival the following spring.
Our Health Professions Advisor will work with you to make smart choices in course selection, in selecting professional schools to which you will apply, and to guide you through the application process. And to really help you understand the medical professions, we have established our Career Mentoring Network – a group of Mount alumni and regional professionals who are themselves practicing healthcare professionals who will serve as a “clinical mentor” for you. You will be able to spend time with them, network, and gain insights into medicine that simply cannot happen in a traditional classroom. Through our Internship List you can easily locate internships with local clinics, hospitals and health centers.
Recent Mount graduates have gone on to some great schools and they’ll tell you that success in the medical professions requires hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence – and that the Mount provides the opportunities and the resources you need to achieve your goals.
