Elementary Education

What makes an inspiring teacher today? And how can you teach all students to be successful?
At the Mount, you’ll find some of the best teachers anywhere. It’s only natural, then, that we know what it takes to make a great teacher: beyond a love of children, it takes preparation and patience, commitment and diligence, compassion and wisdom. One of our most popular departments passes on this formula to those who will shape the next generation.
Our education faculty—the “teacher teachers”—work closely with our education majors and keep up-to-date by working in the classroom alongside their students. You’ll work in the field, actually teaching as you learn, gaining insight into cultural diversity, children with special needs, “inclusive teaching” and proven methods and applications you can take from Mount classrooms to your own classroom. Certification credentials are recognized in 44 states.
Consider dual certification in elementary and special education! Or learn more about certification to teach visual arts.
Note: Admission to Mount St. Mary’s University does not automatically guarantee admittance to and retention in the programs in teacher education.

The International Reading Association has awarded the Certificate of Distinction for Reading Preparation to the Education Department in recognition of its quality reading instruction in preparing elementary teachers.
