Jaci Drass’ class in AY 2013-14

Jaci Drass’ class in AY 2013-14 was national runner up in the 2014 Scholastic Kids are Authors contest. The class wrote a non-fiction book focusing on American landmarks and monuments, titled The Country We Love.  Their book was chosen from over 7,000 nationwide entries.  Jaci, C’05(is a 2005 graduate of MSM and elementary education major.)  is a 2nd grade teacher at Tuscarora Elementary School.  This is the second year Scholastic recognized the authors in Ms. Drass’ class.  Pictured is her class with their medals.

Freshmen and sophomores were invited to submit essays describing their educational philosophies regarding goals, teacher and student roles, and instructional methods for the annual Gamma Tau Chapter Essay Contest. Essays were anonymously judged by student peers in our Gamma Tau chapter according to a rubric. Winners received certificates and checks: Jessica Huhn, our first prize winner from the Class of 2017, received thirty dollars and will read her essay at our Gamma Tau Chapter initiation and dinner on March 4th. Maria Hitchcock , our second prize winner from the Class of 2017, and Tommy Quealy, our honorable mention winner from the Class of 2016, each received prizes of twenty dollars. Congratulations to these recipients, and we appreciate all who participated in the contest!

James Harris photo - Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to James Harris, C ’15, winner of this year’s Patrick J. Goles scholarship! The scholarship is awarded to a junior who exemplifies the Mount’s four pillars in his/her work on campus and is a notable leader in the community. James is a Secondary English Education major. He is a second year RA and is the chairman for Rho Alpha Sigma (the RA honor society) and is a fan and supporter of the Baltimore sports teams. According to James, “A leader is one who works not for himself, but for the benefit of others."


Zach Little with certificateZachary Little, C'13, was named a Maryland Distinguished Teacher Candidate by the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators this year.
Zachary, an elementary and special education candidate major at Mount St. Mary's, excelled in his internships where he demonstrated a care for the individual through his daily planning, reflection, and collaboration with other school personnel.
Dr. Barbara Marinak, university supervisor, accompanied Zac to the award ceremony.

Congratulations, Zachary, on this wonderful accomplishment, you are a shining example of our Mount education programs!

DeansCirclePhoto2013Two extraordinary alums from the School of Education and Human Services were recently inducted into the inaugural class of the Mount St. Mary's Dean's Circle of Excellence. Barbara Spartana Conticelli, C'78, and Michele Egan McGuire, C'87, were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in service to their community, and their work in the field of education.
Conticelli graduated summa cum laude from the Mount and began her career teaching, and then worked in the home raising her children, Maria and Anthony. Conticelli also spent time working as a paralegal and has recently committed to earning her master’s degree in theology from Franciscan University. Conticelli has been a servant to the Church, leading various Scripture studies, sponsoring candidates becoming Catholic in the Rite of Christian Initiation, and living a life of witness to the Catholic faith.
McGuire began her teaching career with the Montgomery County Public Schools, teaching first- and second-grade students. In 2003, she received the Christa McAuliffe Scholarship, a full scholarship, to earn her M.Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) from the University of Maryland, and is currently teaching ESOL to students pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Germantown, MD.
