A reading specialist is first and foremost a literacy coach, supporting classroom teachers in their instruction and assessment of students’ literacy development.  In addition, a reading specialist/literacy coach is a consumer and purveyor of literacy research, sharing findings and leading inquiry efforts.  A reading specialist/literacy coach is also a literacy leader in the school and community.   Coursework highlights the particular needs of English language learners.

The certificate program consists of 30 credit hours (8 courses and one 6-credit practicum).   The program is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association and is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.  Candidates are required to fulfill particular coursework assignments in the school setting well in advance of the reading practicum

“The teaching profession provides opportunities on a daily basis to change lives.  When you teach teachers as a reading specialist, you, in effect, contribute to the learning of all the children they each."Barbara Martin Palmer,  Ph.D.
