       The COMMUNICATION STUDIES Major 

       Total requirements:  36 Credit Hours

       Required foundational courses (18 credit hours):

       Written Communication Competency: COMM 204 Composition Theory and Practice
      
Media Literacy Competency: COMM 210 Media and Society       
       Oral Communication Competency: COMM 230 Public Speaking 
       Theoretical Competency: COMM 325 Art of Persuasion 
       Capstone Experience: COMM 498 Senior Seminar 
       Experiential Learning Component: Either three credits of COMM 205/206 or COMM 480

      

       Students then choose an area of study (12 credit hours)

       1.  Rhetoric and Public Address

       COMM 317 Rhetorical Criticism
       COMM 324 Persuasion in Contemporary Life
       Either COMM 318 Nonverbal Communication or COMM 321 Political Communication

       2.  Writing
       Either COMM 305 Descriptive and Narrative Writing or COMM 306 Technical Writing
       Either COMM 308 Personal Writing or COMM 329 Spiritual Writing
       COMM 322 Copyediting
       Either COMM 374 Creative Nonfiction or COMM 380 Creative Writing

       3.  Public Relations
       COMM 307 Public Relations
       COMM 330 Public Relations Campaigns
       COMM 335 Communication Law and Ethics
       Either COMM 324 Persuasion in Contemporary Life or COMM 327 Crisis Communication

       4.  Journalism
       COMM 315 News Reporting
       COMM 322 Copyediting
       COMM 335 Communication Law and Ethics
       One course from COMM 220 Broadcast Journalism, COMM 319 Global Journalism, or COMM 326
       Sports Journalism

       5.  Independent Option
       Twelve credits of COMM courses selected in consultation with a Communication Studies adviser.

       Lastly, students chose two elective courses in communication studies or approved cognate areas
       (6 credit hours).

COMMUNICATION STUDIES MINOR (18 credits)

  • COMMUNICATION STUDIES MINOR take either COMM 204 or 210 and 15 additional credits of approved courses. COMM courses must account for not less than nine credits of the eighteen-credit total. No more than three credits can be in pratica or internships.


RHETORIC AND PUBLIC ADDRESS MINOR (18 credits)

  • RHETORIC AND PUBLIC ADDRESS MINOR minors take COMM 230, follow the concentration in rhetoric and public address, and take one elective in COMM.
