Theatre

The Theatre Program at Mount Saint Mary's University combines the study of theatre as a liberal art with numerous opportunities for students to practice their craft in performance. Studying theatre in a liberal arts setting allows students to draw connections to other disciplines and other fields of study, balancing theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Mount Theatre students work with faculty and staff as collaborative artists, making theatre from the beginning of their academic career.

At the Mount you can be involved in theatre on any level - performance, history/literature, or technology. Choose a skill-based course like Acting or Directing. Want to find out more about the history of theatre? Take a course like Theatre Experience or Modern Theatre. More interested in the technical side of things? Stagecraft and Stage Design offer you practical experience in areas such as set and lighting design and stage management.

Of course there are plenty of performance opportunities-from the faculty directed Mainstage productions to student-led Spotlight productions.

No matter how you choose to be involved in Theatre at Mount Saint Mary's University-as a major, a minor, or even as an audience member-you'll be participating in one of the oldest co-curricular activities on campus, and you'll be building your own part of Mount Theatre's future.

Upcoming Performances

Clybourne Park

The winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, Clybourne Park has been described as a "response" to Lorraine Hansberry's Raisin In The Sun. Describing the history of a Chicago neighborhood, Bruce Norris tells us a fifty-year long story of how race, economics, diversity, changing neighborhoods, and gentrification affect the residents of one very specific house. Serious and satirical at once, Clybourne Park is a play that challenges our cultural assumptions at every turn.
