French Major and Minor

France image

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures proudly offers a major and minor in French. Students may also become certified to teach French.

A student may develop a specialization in sub-Saharan, North African or Caribbean literature by taking designated courses in French and other non-Western approved courses in other departments

Major Requirements

A major in French consists of 34 credits beginning at the 200 level. Majors must complete two courses in literature (one in Continental French literature and one in Francophone literature) and one in civilization/culture. Normally, majors must take at least 19 credits in French at the Mount, of which a minimum of six credits must be taken during the senior year for those students who have a single major, and three credits for those with a double major. In addition, students must take FREN 498 Senior French Capstone Experience in the fall of their senior year

Minor Requirements

A minor in French consists of 18 credit hours. Students minoring in French are required to take a minimum of 12 credit hours at the Mount.

Secondary Education Teaching Certification - French

The Mount offers a series of courses in secondary education designed to prepare students to teach at the secondary level in French, and to meet requirements for certification in most states (grades 7-12). Each student who plans to teach at the secondary level must have a major in an academic subject field. An advisor in the department of education will be assigned upon the student's admission to a teacher education program. More information can be found through the secondary education program.
