      Nicole Calabro a Mount alum, graduated in 2011 with a Biology degree. Nicole is pursuing a Ph.D. at Yale School of Medicine in Pharmacological Sciences & Molecular Medicine. She will present her research about Thrombospondin-2 null ECM & why it looks like the ideal biomaterial for future wound healing therapies.

      About the Lecture

      Higher education is in flux, and one of the challenges it faces is to relate education, research, and training. Leaving aside matters of history and religious observance, this bears in large part on issues of educational philosophy. This lecture will address these matters within a historical context, considering Confucius, Augustine, and Aquinas, while focusing on nineteenth-century British discussions of education by Herbert Spencer, Mathew Arnold, J. S. Mill, and J. H. Newman, and then engaging challenges posed in recent times by Richard Rorty and others to the very idea of humanistic knowledge and understanding. This then returns the discussion to what might be the distinctive contribution of Catholic colleges and universities.

      About the Lecturer

      John Haldane is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs in the University of St Andrews. He is Chairman of the Royal Institute of Philosophy, and a Fellow both the Royal Society of Arts, and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has held fellowships at the universities of Edinburgh, Oxford, and Pittsburgh and been Royden Davis Professor of Humanities at Georgetown University. He has also been Gifford Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. He is currently Remick Fellow in the Notre Dame Centre for Ethics and Culture and a Consultor to the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture.  He holds degrees in both Fine Art and in Philosophy and is the author of several books including An Intelligent Person’s Guide to Religion (2003), Faithful Reason (2004), Seeking Meaning and Making Sense (2008), The Church and the World (2008), Practical Philosophy (2009), Reasonable Faith (2010). He has also been a frequent contributor to radio, television and the press, working as a columnist on the (London) Times and the Scotsman, as well as writing art reviews and articles for Art Monthly, Burlington Magazine, Modern Painters, and Tate magazine.

      Youngblood Brass Band flouts convention in an ecstatic, raucous, incendiary fashion, taking the form of a New Orleans brass band and morphing it into a punked-out hip-hop behemoth of groove and purpose. The ten-member ensemble, born in Madison, Wisconsin, now hails from all over the US (Madison, Brooklyn, Nashville, Minneapolis, Chicago) and has been unleashing their crash course in genre-bending on stages worldwide since 2000. What other band can claim the honor of having their music spun by DJs like Questlove (of The Roots), working with hip-hop luminaries like Talib Kweli, having their original compositions performed by student marching bands and jazz ensembles around the globe, and still not be out of place at a punk festival?       Instructors will guide you through several workout phases including warm-up, steady uptempo cadences, sprints, climbs, and cool-downs. You control resistance on your bike to make the pedaling as easy or difficult as you choose. Constant adjustment is normal. All you'll need is workout clothes, a towel (to wipe your face), a water bottle and lots of positive energy

      A 30 minute workout that tightens and tones core muscles; improves functional strength for balance, mobility & injury prevention; and motivates you to step outside your comfort zone.

      Improve the way you look and feel with a relaxing 60 minute workout that focuses on high energy flowing poses. This class will strengthen your core, improve your posture, increase your balance and flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles, relieve joint pain, and burn calories!     • Pink Power Session I Time: 7:15p - 8:15p Location: PNC Fitness Center Details:

      Ladies only strength training class held in the PNC Fitness Center.  Registration required. Free to all female Mount Students.  Space is limited to 10 participants.
